Closed-cell spray foam is the premium insulation material for places where performance matters most. It is a dense, rigid foam that expands to fill gaps and bonds directly to wood, metal and masonry. At roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch, it delivers about twice the R-value of fiberglass in the same space, and it seals air leaks in the same pass.
Its closed cell structure also blocks moisture. At about 1.5 inches it acts as a vapor retarder, and it does not absorb water the way open-cell foam or fiberglass can. That makes it the go-to choice for Tulsa crawl spaces, rim joists, metal buildings that sweat, low-slope roofs and cathedral ceilings with shallow rafters.
Because it costs more than other options, we use closed-cell foam where it earns its price. Every project starts with a free estimate that spells out where the foam goes, how thick it will be, and what R-value you will get.
Tulsa tip
Closed-cell foam must be sprayed in passes of about 1.5 to 2 inches at a time to cure properly. Ask how many passes your job needs, especially for 3 inches or more.
Where Closed-Cell Spray Foam Makes the Most Sense
- ✓Cathedral ceilings and bonus rooms with limited rafter depth
- ✓Crawl space walls and rim joists that see moisture
- ✓Metal buildings, shops and pole barns with condensation
- ✓Low-slope roofs where you want maximum R-value in a thin layer
- ✓Basements and below-grade walls
- ✓Homes in damp or flood-prone areas near rivers and creeks
Closed-Cell vs Open-Cell Spray Foam
Open-cell foam is softer and lighter, about R-3.5 to R-3.8 per inch, and costs less. It is a good choice for roof decks and interior walls, and it absorbs sound well. It is vapor permeable, so it is not the right choice for damp areas or direct contact with metal.
Closed-cell foam is about four times denser, adds racking strength to walls and roofs, resists water, and fits more R-value into tight spaces. It typically runs about $1.00 to $2.00 per board foot installed, compared with about $0.45 to $0.80 for open-cell. Many Tulsa projects use both: open-cell on the roof deck and closed-cell in the crawl space or rim joists.
